Controlling and Deterring Large Pests

Hello, and welcome to my blog! My name is Dee, and I hate pests. I have struggled with many pests in my home, but contrary to popular misconception, these pests have been bigger than mice or cockroaches or ants. Rather, I have had squirrels in the attic and various marsupials living under my porch. This blog is devoted to getting rid of the larger animals. It contains everything I have learned about removing and deterring these creatures. If you hate pests but want to focus on the larger pests, you have come to the right place. Please explore my blog and enjoy!

Tips For Deterring Termites

by Katrina Alvarez

Termites can cause significant damage to your property and can even compromise the foundations of your house. They're so small they can be hard to spot until you start noticing signs of an infestation, such as piles of wood dust accumulating around your wooden furniture or wooden doorways, and they multiply quickly. Once you have an infestation it can take time and dedication to rid your property of termites, so it's wise to try and do what you can to deter them from your home. Here are some tips for keeping termites at bay:

Minimise Contact Between Soil And Wood

Subterranean termites can easily get access to the wooden structures of your property that come into contact with soil, such as may occur in crawl spaces or perimeter landscaping. The ideal situation would be to keep wooden siding several centimetres above soil level and to have only the concrete section of your foundation coming into contact with the ground. You should also keep the perimeter of your property clear of debris, and you can have a pest control company apply a termite barrier treatment around your property to deter them.

Keep Your Foundation Free From Moisture

Moisture creates an attractive environment for termites, and they could be eating away at your foundations without you even knowing it. Minimise the risk of this happening by regularly checking your property for leaks and positioning downspouts correctly to ensure water is being directed away from your external walls. Surrounding soil on your property should have good drainage and storm drains should be processing overflow water at least a couple of metres away from your property. You can also have vapour block barriers installed in your crawl space to prevent high levels of humidity.

Remove Sources Of Food

Termites feast on cellulose, wood and paper products, so keep these materials away from the perimeter of your home. Don't leave cardboard boxes, wood or recycling caddies against external walls, and clean up leaf debris from your yard. Tree stumps should be removed and rotten fencing replaced. You can also have your fencing coated with a preservative that repels termites. A pest control professional can recommend suitable termite-repellent products.

If you'd like a bespoke termite control plan for your property, or if you think you may already have a termite infestation, contact your local pest control company. They can assess your home and garden and make recommendations based on their findings. For more information on termite control, contact a company like Krahes Pest Control.
