Controlling and Deterring Large Pests

Hello, and welcome to my blog! My name is Dee, and I hate pests. I have struggled with many pests in my home, but contrary to popular misconception, these pests have been bigger than mice or cockroaches or ants. Rather, I have had squirrels in the attic and various marsupials living under my porch. This blog is devoted to getting rid of the larger animals. It contains everything I have learned about removing and deterring these creatures. If you hate pests but want to focus on the larger pests, you have come to the right place. Please explore my blog and enjoy!

How Do You Know You Need a Termite Treatment?

by Katrina Alvarez

There are various ways you can help to prevent termites from making their home on your property but you need to take proactive measures if they are to be successful. The application of certain insecticides designed for termites is a good prevention measure, for example. As many pest control experts would agree, prevention is better than cure but, in many cases, a termite treatment needs to be applied retrospectively. In such cases, you need to be able to spot the presence of termites in the first place. Therefore, it is advisable to book a professional pest control termite inspection from time to time. In the meantime, what are the signs that you may be facing an infestation from these sorts of insects?

  • Look For Boreholes

To begin with, drywood termites tend to leave tiny little holes in the timbers they have accessed. Look around your property for any exposed wood where small boreholes have recently appeared. These tend to look like someone has been sticking pins or small nails into your wood before removing them. If you notice any of these but are still unsure whether termites are present, then consult a pest control firm.

  • Check Distressed Paintwork

If you have wood that is not exposed because it has been protected with a coat of paint or varnish, then it is less likely you will have termites within the timbers. That said, they can still get into wood that has been painted if there is one side where they can gain access to it without paint creating a barrier. Under such circumstances, you may notice that the painted side has become flaky prematurely. Equally, if you detect signs of bubbling up paint or varnish, then it could be down to termites. Knock onto any such wood you suspect of harbouring drywood termites. If it sounds hollow, then a termite treatment will be necessary.

  • Use Your Ears

Finally, it is worth mentioning that when termites are within a building they are typically not silent. They will make a buzzing or scratching noise that you can detect without specialist equipment and simply by using your ears. The problem is, however, that termites tend to be quiet when they know people are around. Therefore, you should turn off all of your lights and go into a room silently. If you subsequently hear noises that disappear the moment your presence is detected, then the probable cause is a colony of termites.
