Controlling and Deterring Large Pests

Hello, and welcome to my blog! My name is Dee, and I hate pests. I have struggled with many pests in my home, but contrary to popular misconception, these pests have been bigger than mice or cockroaches or ants. Rather, I have had squirrels in the attic and various marsupials living under my porch. This blog is devoted to getting rid of the larger animals. It contains everything I have learned about removing and deterring these creatures. If you hate pests but want to focus on the larger pests, you have come to the right place. Please explore my blog and enjoy!

Essential Methods of Termite Control

by Katrina Alvarez

Termites are a big menace to many homeowners.  If ignored, they can cause huge damages that can be quite expensive to repair. To keep these pests away from your house, thorough steps must be followed. Below are effective termite control methods that you can apply;

Good Drainage

For termites to survive, they need water. As a result, termites will often habit in wet and moist areas around the home. However, they cannot habit a busy area in your home no matter how suitable the termite living conditions are.  Moisture found in leaking roofs, clogged gutters and isolated stagnant water around house foundations are common termite habitats. Repair any broken shingles in the roofing. This will reduce the moisture conditions at the foundation caused by water droplets therefore denying termites' water access. Mould, cracking paint on the attics and basements are signs of leaks which possibly end up on the foundation. Make trenches and drains which will divert water from the foundation. This reduces any water seeping underground to termites.

Clear the Yard

Any area around the home that is in contact with the soil is prone to termite infestation. Clearing any organic debris, vegetation and soil around the foundations reduces the termite's thriving environment. Any wood objects in the compound should be kept at a raised level away from the soil. Also, they should be treated with termite pest control chemicals as an additional measure. For assets like fences, decks and basements that are exposed to the soil, treat them with pest control chemicals before placing them on the soil.

Chemical barriers

The foundation of the house should be protected from termites at all costs. To deter termites, make a chemical perimeter barrier around the house on the foundation. Concrete or asphalt can be infused with chemicals and drilled on the foundation. Soil that surrounds the foundation can also be treated with chemicals to keep termites further away. Chemical barriers can also be drilled underneath the flooring. This is critical in wooden floors.

Physical Barriers

This is a physical barrier implanted to prevent termites from infesting the foundation. Physical barriers should be put during house construction. A stainless steel mesh with an impenetrable cover of crushed granite is a good physical barrier. Membranes can also be treated with termiticides and used as a physical barrier.

It is always recommended to have your home regularly checked by a pest control professional. Early monitoring and identification of any infestation makes it easier to control termites.
